Hello, good people. On October 23rd, I'm riding the Gran Fondo of Oakland through 100 miles of East Bay hills and potholes to raise funds for my favorite cycling advocacy group, Bike East Bay (née East Bay Bicycle Coalition). Thanks in large part to the tireless work of BEB, we can now take the greenest mode of transit on the second greenest any time of day, anywhere around the bay. (I'm talking about bikes on BART--that's these guys!) They also were fundamental at the founding of the national phenomena that have become Bike Month and Bike to Work Day. Those of you who know me know that I believe that bikes are a huge part of the solution to the greatest threat of our time, but the key to leaving the car behind is comfort and safety in the saddle. Bike East Bay covers all fronts, offering safety classes; promoting cycling infrastructure such as dedicated bike lanes and paths; advocating for sensible and safe legislation . . . If you care half as much as I about bikes, birds or the earth--or, if you just want to humor or enable my Quixotic tendencies--please consider donating to Bike East Bay. Thank you so much for your support!
Backed by over 4,000 members, Bike East Bay has been advocating for better bicycling for over 40 years. We empower our members, volunteers, and partner community groups to champion bike lanes and traffic safety solutions.
We work with transit agencies and local governments to build bike-specific infrastructure and shape bike-friendly policies. As a regional watchdog, we ensure that cities complete bicycle master plans and allocate adequate funding and staff to building bike networks. We help build world-class bike infrastructure by pushing cities to design competitive, innovative projects that will attract state and federal funding for construction.
Our biggest regional victories include securing all hours bike access on BART, making it the most bike-friendly transit agency in the country. We’re also making regional connections possible with the soon to be completed bike paths on both the Richmond Bridge and the East Span of the Bay Bridge.
