Did you know that 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy? In Virginia, there are 80,000 people with epilepsy of all different races and genders. Epilepsy is caused by a multitude of factors. This can include genetic makeup, infection, trauma, stroke, injury from birth, inflammation, infection, and more. Often times, seizures can be controlled through different treatments. Some treatments include medication, change of diet therapy, surgery, medically implanted devices, and more. However, there are currently no cures. Epilepsy can go away on its own as well. It is possible to control life with epilepsy with appropriate treatment.
The Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia works to promote awareness about epilepsy and provide assistance to those with the disorder, leads the fight to overcome the challenges of living with epilepsy and to accelerate therapies to stop seizures, find cures, and save lives.

EFVA's mission is to PROMOTE AWARENESS about epilepsy, ADVOCATE for and PROVIDE ASSISTANCE to Virginians with the disorder through:
- helplines, regional offices and peer counselors statewide.
- annual awareness days and awareness strolls.
- training for employers, school personnel and public service employees.
- emergency assistance and transportation.
- Spanish speaking offices.
- Family Fun Days and Virtual Support Groups.
- Memory Courses
- Grants for service dogs and bicycles
