I live a very happy and comfortable life, with a family, career and nice home in the City of Atlanta which my spouse and I have enjoyed for over 25 years. But one September morning in 2016 that tranquility was shattered while I was completing a long bike ride with a group of friends in Southwest Atlanta.
While riding at high speed I somehow managed to collide with a tree limb growing alongside Whitehall Street near the West End MARTA station.
Sometimes accidents like this strike in an instant, like lightning. In one moment I was riding fast and smoothly, the next I was lying by the roadside in shock.
My helmet was smashed, and blood flowed from a gash in my right leg.
As the emergency responders loaded me in the ambulance I could not bear the pain in my neck. Clearly, I suffered a serious injury unlike any I have ever experienced.
Fortunately, I was only a short drive from the best-equipped trauma center in Georgia.
At Grady Memorial Hospital I received two surgeries, one for the fractured vertebra in my neck and one for a deep-tissue laceration on my leg. During the 5-hour long surgery on my neck, a team of neurologists fused the fractured vertebra with a healthy one, during which they also prevented any damage to my spinal cord.
To everyone's surprise, I returned to my beloved sport of cycling a mere three months after this accident.
Now, a year later, I feel as fit as ever and am ready to tackle the VeloCity Atlanta Century!
I cannot adequately express my gratitude to the staff at Grady Memorial Hospital for making this fantastic recovery possible!
