The societal and economic impacts of brain injury are becoming increasingly well known. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at least 1.7 million people in the USA suffer brain trauma each year. Most of the injuries occur in motor vehicle crashes, strokes, assaults, falls, and sports-related incidents. Each year, about 50,000 brain-trauma patients die, 230,000 are hospitalized and up to 90,000 survive with long-term disabilities. At least 3 million people in the USA live with disabilities because of traumatic brain injuries, the CDC says. According to the agency, brain injuries also take a huge financial toll: Americans spend roughly $60 billion a year - $10 billion for medical care and $50 billion for lost productivity.
Krempels Center, located in Portsmouth New Hampshire, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people living with brain injury from trauma, tumor or stroke. The Center offers programs that engage members in meaningful and productive experiences and provides ongoing support and resources to those impacted by brain injury. In addition, the organization’s community outreach initiative provides education to the public about brain injury and brain injury prevention.

What the ride is - The King Challenge is a fundraising event: participation comes with a commitment to raise minimum amounts to help support Krempels Center. Please see the Fundraising Section of our website for more details.
What the ride is not – This ride is not a race, it is designed to be an enjoyable day of cycling and camaraderie.
Three routes, of varying lengths, have been designed to accommodate a wide range of cycling abilities. Fundraising minimums have been set at easily-attainable levels and the focus is on family fun.
Krempels Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people living with brain injury through evidence-based programming, shared experiences,and support in a welcoming community.
