I've been associated with Less Cancer and its bike ride for about six years. Each year when fundraising is involved I've dedicated my riding effort to people I've known who have had cancer. First it was for Mary Ann Merikoski who told me about Less Cancer. Next it was for my brother Tom Shumaker who set a standard few could match for having a positive attitude about his renal cell disease. Another person who, in his own way, helped raise money and awareness was Tom FitzPatrick, a classmate from high school. Tom wasn't satisfied with just one form of cancer, he tried two varieties. This year I'm dedicating my efforts to recognize my Annapolis neighbor, Jim Urban. Jim is mid-way through the extensive treatment for multiple myeloma at Johns Hopkins.
Less Cancer Bike Ride Split the Mitt 2019
This summer, we’re getting back on the road. Since 2012, the Less Cancer Ride has evolved from a few excited, dedicated advocates into an ever-growing community of cyclists who want to change how the world looks at cancer.
The ride is something big, and our inspiring Team Less Cancer is getting there in style. Our seasoned crew of riders is riding to the ride all the way from Midland, Michigan. At over 100 miles, they'll be honoring the hard work that goes into spreading the Less Cancer mission, as well as the effort, sacrifice, and lessons learned along the way. Their ride will culminate at The Cowell Family Cancer Center, Traverse City Michigan to meet and great riders who are eagerly awaiting the big community ride on Sunday morning.
And it's Sunday that we're counting on YOU to join us for. Any distance, any pace, every effort adds up. The ride, the route, and the feeling of accomplishment are your reward, as well as great food and excellent fun along the way!
It’s not a race, it’s a journey. Go fast, go slow, but go with the confidence that your efforts to ride and fundraise have a big impact on individuals, families, and entire communities around the nation and in forty countries around the globe. After the ride, we’ll have live music at The Workshop in Traverse City with 100% of donations going to Less Cancer. Sunday’s ride will start together, with riders peeling off for their preferred distances. Expect great food stops and a number of supporting business and coffee shops with delicious goodies and treats to keep you fueled for a big day on the bike. You’ll want to save a little energy for the, a part of the Cowell Cancer Center’s annual weekend to honor cancer survivors and the heroes who help heal.
Your registration fee goes straight to Less Cancer, and you can also ask friends and family members to donate to the cause as well. Our goal is to raise money and raise awareness to make real change in the cancer community and make prevention a priority.

The Next Generation Choices Foundation, also known as Less Cancer, is an American nonprofit organization (501(c)(3)) founded by Bill Couzens in 2004 to educate the public about cancer prevention through digital media and community-supported programming. Less Cancer seeks to make risk reduction and prevention vital parts of cancer cures. The organization's goal is to increase public awareness about cancer prevention, including sharing information about environment- and food-based causes of cancer. They also provide information on risk-reduction strategies; changing community or corporate practices and products; and sharing information about healthy lifestyle choices.
