October 2, 2012:
Thank you to all of the donors who, after 2 days, have helped me surpass 2 goals!  I have to admit- it's been amazing to see all of the donations that have come in through friends of my family. Now I am leaving it up to my own personal social networks to help me reach the next goal of $1,500.00.  When I worked at Safe Passage as a crisis hotline volunteer, I was part of an in-depth educational training that addressed the origins and effects of intimate partner violence.  Here are some resources that I've found to be helpful in understanding how perpetrators use abusive tactics to gain power and control over people in their lives:

The Power and Control Wheel is a powerful visual tool that illustrates the numerous forms that abuse can take:

INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence is an amazing national organization that works to addresses violence against women of color- meaning both violence within communities (such as rape and abuse) and violence against communities (war, colonialism and police violence).

WOW! I am amazed at the generosity of the donors who have decided to participate in fundraising for Safe Passage.  Within one day, we have surpassed by initial modest goal of $200.00 by an unbelievable $500.00!!!  I am amazed that people from all over have decided to donate to an amazing community organization that is doing incredible work on a local level.  I believe that community organizations are the backbone of social change.  By changing the lives of just one family, or just one individual- Safe Passage is able to start a ripple of positivity that will translate on a global scale.  I've increased my fundraising goal to $1,000.00.  I am thrilled that everyone has been inspired to support an organization that is so close to me.  Thank you, a million times over.

Thanks for visiting my Hot Chocolate Run fundraising page! On December 2, I'm running in this year’s Hot Chocolate Run. This great event raises funds for Safe Passage, the organization addressing domestic violence in Hampshire County.

I hope you’ll make a donation and help me meet my fundraising goal. Safe Passage relies on support from people like us to fund their programming--including an emergency shelter program, individual counseling and support groups, legal services, a 24-hour hotline and more. Here are some examples of what these services cost:

$20: Emergency funds for a woman to purchase groceries or diapers
$45: A one-hour counseling session for a woman seeking help for the first time
$80: One weekly drop-in group session for survivors of domestic violence
$100: An hour of ASL interpreting for a deaf survivor's counseling session
$135: Three sessions for children who have witnessed domestic violence
$500: A month of on-call advocacy for victims of domestic violence police calls

All contributions are tax-deductible, and you’ll receive an emailed receipt immediately after you donate.

Thank you so much for your support!  If you want to register for the event or learn more about it, visit http://hotchocolaterun.com.
