I'd like to dedicate my ride to my late husband Brian McShane and all those who keep the depth of their struggles to themselves. Brian chose to end his fight in 2017 and shocked us all by doing so. He was so intelligent and funny and we did not know until after his death that he was suffering from Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive and fatal brain disease associated with repeated traumatic brain injuries, including concussions and blows to the head (he played football and rugby in high school and college). There is currently no cure, but there is a strong community of surviving family members and a robust research program at Boston University, raising awareness and identifying those at risk.
The Ride for Mental Health 2023
The Ride for Mental Health is one of the first rides in the country to benefit mental health. The proceeds raised will be donated to McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, for the education, research, and treatment of mental illness including anxiety, borderline personality disorder, depression, eating disorders and substance abuse. Our mission is to raise funds for McLean so that we can help accelerate the progress being made to help others who suffer from mental illness.
We also hope to end the stigma surrounding mental illness through education and awareness. The promotion of this ride is a start. Many if not most of us are touched by close friends and relatives who have suffered from one type or another of mental illness.
