Join the SAAS Ascension Cycling Team to raise funds & awareness for adaptive cycling and mental health. By riding with the SAAS-ACT Team you will ride along side of people with disabilities using hand cycles, trikes, tandems and other adaptive cycles in pursuit of better physical & mental health. Donations will go to the Eduardo Aguirre Adaptive Cycling Fund through Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports.
Eduardo Aguirre manages SAAS’s adaptive cycling program and social media. Training for the last two Tours de Tucson, Eduardo encouraged, road with, lead and coached our handcycling team. In March 2023, Eduardo died from suicide after a long struggle with depression. In his memory and in support of good mental and physical health, Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports is creating an Adaptive Cycling and Outdoor Adventure Center on the bank of the Rillito River along the Loop. A satellite center will be maintained in Sam Lena Park, home of the SAAS Velvets adaptive cycling program. The Centers will be built from recycled shipping containers and will integrate accessibility, universal design, and shaded gathering areas. They will be central staging points for adaptive syncline, wheelchair fitness, hiking, birding, and outdoor adventures.
The Centers will be open in the Fall and Winter Season (October - May) for on-site ‘rentals’ free of charge (donations gratefully accepted). Online and phone appointment systems will allow people to reserve their favorite cycle for 2-hour use. Adaptive cycle rentals for off-site use will be available for a nominal suggested donation.
Just think, if you are a hand cyclist from out of town and didn’t ship your bike to Tucson for your vacation, you’ll be able to rent a bike and ride on the Chuck Huckleberry Loop -Tucson’s 137 mile system of safe, paved, protected, vehicle-free paths!
Please support this worthy cause because it is making Tucson a national hub for adaptive sports!!
Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports
Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports (SAAS) creates opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage in recreational and competitive sports. Adaptive cycling means everyone can enjoy riding a bike, handcycle, trike or tandem. In 2023, SAAS lost our dear friend & adaptive cycling coordinator Eduardo Aguirre to depression and suicide. We are riding El Tour de Tucson 2023 in Eduardo's honor. Funds raised will go to the Eduardo Aguirre Adaptive Cycling Center Fund to support people with disabilities who want to start handcycling or other forms of adaptive cycling in support of mental health & wellness.
Please join our sponsor OMEO AMERICA in support of SAAS. The OMEO Cycling Team will raise funds, build awareness, and promote cycling for good health. As an OMEO Cycling Team Member, you will gain access to a special OMEO Accessible / reserved parking area for handcyclists & trikes to unload near the START/FINISH line downtown Tucson. You will have the support of the OMEO CREW to help load your handcycle or trike, get you to the reserved starting line area, provide hydration, snacks, and a professional massage or cool-down stretch post-race! Those who raise over $250 will recevie an OMEO Cycling JERSEY.
