On September 24, 2023 I will take on the challenge of the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo cycling event. I'm riding in support of the Cancer Journeys Foundation Prostate Cancer Awareness Project and its mission to increase the rate of prostate cancer survivorship.
This event takes on a special meaning for me this year. I joined the Innaguaral Ride in 2012 and have been able to participate in every one except for one. But this year I come to the event having ridden 100,000 miles cancer-free since my diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2009.
Each year in the United States, approximately 240,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer - that's one man every 17 minutes. On average, 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. The good news is that research shows prostate cancer is very treatable, but only if it is discovered early before it has metastasized. According to the American Cancer Society, survival rates are nearly 100-percent for men with prostate cancer that is found while it is still within the prostate gland or nearby areas as mine was.
