Eleanor and I stumbled upon Bikes Fight Cancer when she was in the midst of her fight against childhood leukemia. Our family loves bikes: we take multiple family bike vacations every year. At 15 months old, Eleanor was cruising in the bike trailer on an epic ride from Montreal to Ottawa. So, when we saw the sign that said “Love Bikes, Hate Cancer,” we knew these were our people.
Eleanor rode in the first Bikes Fight Cancer kids’ ride in 2019 while in active treatment at the age of 6. It was her “steroid week” actually, and her moods and energy were always changing. She was grumpy, sad, and mad. But she did it! She beamed upon completing the 6 miles and returning to the start. She’s joined me to complete half of the 25-mile loop every year since. This year, Eleanor (now a strong 11-year old rider) will join me for the full 25-mile loop. We come back to ride every year to celebrate her good health, and to honor the journey that others take in their fight against cancer.
