On Saturday, August 17, 2024, I'm planning to bike up Mount Washington, a 7.6 mile all-uphill race to the summit of the highest peak in the northeastern United States. With an average grade of 12% and 4,678 ft of elevation gained over the 7 miles, many consider this the steepest cycling race in the world. VeloNews dubbed the event a Ride of a Lifetime. The Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb is the largest annual fundraiser for Tin Mountain Conservation Center.

PJAMM Cycling has a statistic for distance over 10% and this is the steepest among eight climbs that fit that unique category. No climb open to the public in the US, other than Mt. Washington averages over 10% for five miles.  The steepest quarter-mile on this monster is 16%, and the steepest mile is 13.8%. The route is 7.6 miles in length, has an average grade of 12% with extended sections of 18% and the last 50 yards is an amazing(?) 22%!

Mt. Washington is also home to the worst weather ever recorded on earth. (Just great, right?) The highest non-tornadic wind speed ever recorded on earth was at the summit of Mount Washington at 231mph on 12/4/1934. Hurricane force winds are present 100 days a year on average. Not only that but it boasts the coldest (wind chill -108 on October 2023) in the northeast. Thankfully I'm not doing this in the fall or winter, but summer be damned, temps over 72°F have NEVER been recorded. This is part of what makes Mount Washington the toughest bicycle climb in the world.

Please help me support a great environmental organization, Tin Mountain Conservation Center (TMCC), which has provided environmental education to over 75,000 students, campers, and individuals throughout schools and communities in Northern New Hampshire and western Maine for over 34 years. For sample of some of the work TMCC does with students, link to TMCC YouTube Channel.
