As an oncologist, I see enormous suffering and I find humility watching my patients bravely flighting this soul depleting disease. When I ride, I try to remember my patients that I have treated and I try remembering their stories, their words---a man who often finished his sentence, "how about that for a story," a coffee machine maker, a survivor of Woodstock festival, someone was a lover of vintage cars, a well known poet who asked for an extra morphine script a day before he took entire bottle to find peace on the other side, a man who had cried in front of me as he had no other place to cry--a widower who could not cry in front of his struggling eight year old boy; a woman who had left her abusive relationship and became a buddhist nun. A sex worker who claimed she had read every short story written by Chehov. There is an enormous privilege to be an oncologist and witness this human frailty from a vintage point. It is hard not to become a friend of your patients. It is hard not to cry while they cry. Riding a bike and suffering through this grueling physical activity gives me an opportunity to glance into the physical and emotional struggle that my patients go through. Somehow, this brings me closer to them, those I have lost, those I will lose soon, and those (I hope more or more) who will survive this. Let's do it.
