Your eyes do not deceive you: I'm going to ride a bike up Mount Washington. The tallest mountain in the Northeast, the home of the worst weather in the world, the steepest paved 7 miles in the Americas, the one they give you a bumper sticker for for getting to the top of in a car — that one. Honestly, it's kind of fun.

But it's not just for fun — it's for a good cause. The Tin Mountain Conservation Center is an organization dedicated to environmental conservation in northern New Hampshire and western Maine. By using the real outdoor world of the region as their classroom, they teach students valuable lessons not just about ecology and conservation, but about our species' place in and connection to nature. I admit I'm mostly doing this because I love this kind of suffering, but I'm proud that my suffering is a good excuse to raise money for a worthy cause.

Ultimately, my goal is to raise $1,000 for Tin Mountain, to make sure they can continue to run their valuable educational programs, and I hope I've made a good case to convince you to pitch in. All of the money you donate goes directly to Tin Mountain and to helping other people explore and learn about the stunning natural world of northern New England — none of it goes to me. But the more you donate, the happier the organizers will be, and the more likely it is I get to do this again. So it's a doubly good cause.
