I’m Climbing a Mountain (Literally). Help Me Make It Count!

On August 16, I’m taking on one of cycling’s most brutal challenges: the Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb—a 7.6-mile suffer-fest straight up the Northeast’s highest peak. This isn't just a hill; it’s a wall disguised as a road, with an average 12% grade (read: painful) and a final push so steep it should require a rope and a prayer.

Oh, and did I mention the weather? Mount Washington holds the record for the highest wind speed ever recorded by humans—231 mph. That’s tornado-level. This place throws hurricane-force winds over 100 days a year. Perfect for a bike ride, right?

So why am I doing this? Because I’m slightly unhinged. And because I believe in the incredible work of Tin Mountain Conservation Center, which has spent 34+ years inspiring kids and communities to love and protect the outdoors. They’ve reached 75,000+ students and nature lovers with hands-on programs, and I want to help them reach even more.

My goal: Raise $2,500 and make it to the top of this mountain without crying (much). I’m training hard, aiming to average 220 watts, keep my heart rate somewhere below “impending doom” (160-170 bpm), and not let my cadence drop below 60 rpm—even when my legs beg for mercy. I also hope to drop 20 lbs (or, realistically, 10) and finish in 105 minutes.

I’m doing this for my daughter, Emma, to show her that big goals take big effort—but they’re always worth it. And because, let’s be honest, pain is temporary, but glory (and your donations) last forever.

If you can spare a few bucks, I’d be forever grateful. Every dollar helps Tin Mountain keep doing what they do best—getting more people outside and into nature.

Huge thanks to Emma for inspiring me, to Tom Keane "TK" & the LTT crew for keeping the suffering fun, to all of Ripper Nation, and to Sara Bresnick at Pedal Power Coaching for whipping me into shape.

'Mt. Washington is the steepest 5 mile segment in the USA at 12.7% (#23 World) and the third most difficult US bike climb behind Mauna Kea and Haleakala and #31 in the world. '
