November 22 update:

When I started volunteering at the shelter in 2004, I very quickly became awed and amazed by Anthia, our Children's Advocate. Every day, she showed the kids in the shelter so much love and caring. They absolutely adored her and she adored them, and it was a joy to watch. Anthia helped the moms in the shelter rebuild their relationships with their kids. She did her job with so much respect for everyone in each family, and so much belief in their potential for a safe, happy life. It was a sad day in 2006 when because of budget cuts, we had to cut this critical position.

Luckily for us, Anthia stayed on as Director of Programs. She makes me laugh every day and I continue to be impressed with her skill, humor, and cut-through-the-bullshit style.

Since 2006 I have written grant applications to every possible funder I can find, asking them to help us reinstate the position. Most said no. The ones who said "yes" were only able to award enough to fund an internship or the purchase of supplies for the program (like our super duper awesome backyard play structure). It's been really discouraging. Reinstating this position has been my #1 goal for almost my entire career at SP. And it's all because I got to see Anthia in action. I know what kind of incredible value this position brings to our organization, and more importantly to the dozens of kids who stay in our shelter every year.

This year, we are hoping to raise enough through the HCR to reinstate this position for the first time in 9 years. This is so personal for me. I've volunteered with kids in the shelter. I've held them in my lap while their moms were in counseling meetings. I've played with them, I've watched "Shrek 2" about a billion times, I've talked with them and I've seen them grow up. The research shows that kids who've lived through trauma, like domestic violence, have much better chances of healing from the abuse when they have access to loving, caring adults. This is essential.

This is real. This is within reach and I really, really hope that THIS IS HAPPENING. Please help. Ask your friends to help. Let's do this. Thank you.

The HCR raises money for my beloved Safe Passage, the organization that builds safety, justice and hope for hundreds of families in Hampshire County every year. I celebrated my 10th anniversary working for Safe Passage in September, and with every passing year I feel more and more proud to be involved with this organization.

I've lived in Hampshire County my whole life. Over the last ten years I've seen people from every part of my life walk through our doors. Former coworkers, classmates, and friends come here for counseling, legal help, and support groups. If you've spent any time in Hampshire County, you also know people whose lives have been changed by Safe Passage. Your neighbors and friends and coworkers--women, men and kids who've experienced abuse--come here because they're in danger, and they're scared, and they're ready to do something about it.

After working with Safe Passage, they feel safe. For many survivors, coming to Safe Passage is the first time they've been able to talk about their relationship without feeling judged. They get the help they need to stay safe, and keep their kids safe, and heal, and live their lives the way they want to.

I give my time and my energy to this organization year-round. This time of year, especially, I also give money. Our donors are the reason Safe Passage can help so many people every year. I'm proud to donate to Safe Passage because I see what happens with those dollars--lives changed for the better, and lives saved.

I donate to my friends' Hot Chocolate Run fundraising pages because I'm so grateful to them for joining us in our work, raising money for Safe Passage. And I'm asking YOU to join us--to support our work with a donation. I hope you'll consider a gift of $15, $35, $55, $120 or more. With your gift you'll give so much to a survivor of domestic violence--hope, healing, safety, justice, and a way forward, free of violence.

Thank you for your support!

Love, Sarah
