Even the "not so bad" cancers are terrible. When my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer everyone told us that it wasn't a big deal, that prostate cancer is totally treatable, he was "lucky."
We are indeed very fortunate that my dad is still with us and cancer free. But the treatments he received were anything but "not a big deal" and the after effects of the treatments have been frankly awful. I have friends who have watched their fathers die from this "not so bad" cancer and would tell you that it's actually devastating.
Early detection makes an enormous difference.
On September 30, 2018, I will take on the challenge of the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo cycling event. I am riding in support of the Cancer Journeys Foundation Prostate Cancer Awareness Project and its mission to increase the rate of prostate cancer survivorship.
Each year in the United States, approximately 240,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer - that's one man every 17 minutes. On average, 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. The good news is that research shows prostate cancer is very treatable, but only if it is discovered early, before it has metastasized.
According to the American Cancer Society, survival rates are nearly 100-percent for men with prostate cancer that is found while it is still within the prostate gland or nearby areas.
The #1 way you can support my participation in the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo is by taking advantage of the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project's FREE ProstateTracker. Sign up for your free ProstateTracker account.
The next way you can lend your support is by contributing to my fundraising efforts. Contributions will support the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project in its mission to spread the message of prevention and early detection.
Thank you for your support and your encouragement as I take on this important challenge!
