If you've found yourself here, you're probably aware that I really enjoy running and you may be aware that I'm a recovering addict and alcoholic. To say that the former assisted in the ongoing recovery from the latter would be an oversimplification and an understatement. The time I've spent in road shoes on local bike paths with friends has allowed for community, education and support. The hours and days spent in the mountains have provided a contemplative benefit and a strengthening of spirituality. And all of it has restored the physical damage that resulted from a decade and a half of addiction. Given my experience, it should come as no surprise that I believe sport and nature have the power to not only bring us back to what we were, but to push us to a place where nothing is impossible. A place where life is lived to the fullest possible extent. I know that I'm extremely lucky. My disease is in my head and the treatment is simple and free. Others are less fortunate and require more complex and expensive interventions to regain ability and to live life on their own terms.
I'm running the Vermont 100 Mile Endurance Race this summer. While I've begun training for this event by running and conditioning, there are people out there for whom just getting out to walk can be a challenge. People who need a little extra assistance to meet the challenge that brings health, fun and passion to their lives. Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports provides sports and recreational programs as well as wellness and environmental retreats to people with disabilities. Their programs are offered to people of all ages, with a variety of disabilities. Programs include skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and Nordic in the winter; and sailing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, cycling, rock climbing, horseback riding, and more in the warmer months.
Please consider donating what you can to help me reach my goal and help Vermont Adaptive meet their goal too!
Thank you!
