Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: Riding for the Next Generation
For as long as I can remember, the bike has been at the center of my life. It has taken me from junior racing to the professional peloton, through countless miles, races, and experiences that shaped who I am. But more importantly, cycling has always been about community—the friendships, lessons, and resilience it builds.
This year, my reason for riding has taken on an entirely new meaning.
In December 2024, I was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that primarily affects children and young adults. While I’ve spent my career training my body to perform at the highest level, I now find myself in a battle I never expected. Through it all, the bike remains a source of strength, focus, and motivation.
On May 31st, I’ll be riding the 48 mi Big Scoop route at the CCAP Breakaway Benefit—not just as a stepping stone toward my goal of completing the 100-mile Closer to Free Ride in September, but to give back to an organization that has meant so much to me.
Why This Ride Matters
I’ve been involved in the Connecticut Cycling Advancement Program (CCAP) since its start in 2013 because I believe in its mission: getting more kids on bikes and giving young athletes access to opportunities that can change their lives.
Cycling teaches resilience, discipline, and self-belief—qualities I’ve leaned heavily on during this most recent challenge. For young athletes, a bike can be more than just a sport; it can be a lifeline—a way to build confidence, overcome adversity, and find a supportive community.
Beyond that, this ride is an opportunity to raise awareness. When a child or teenager is diagnosed with cancer, their entire world shifts. Their peers may not fully understand what they’re going through, but events like the Breakaway Benefit can help bridge that gap—bringing awareness, support, and unity through the sport we love.
