I'm raising $1,000 for BikeHouston because I want Houston to be the next great city for riding a bike.
My Story
When I first started riding a bike for transportation back in Chicago in 2006, it changed my whole life. I lost 25 pounds, combatted seasonal depression, and I developed an active lifestyle for the first time ever. At my physical exam at the doctor's office, he said plainly, "Keep biking. It's doing amazing things for you." Obviously, the benefits of bicycling regularly on the personal level are tremendous. Now imagine how our communities might be different if more people biked more often. More health. More happiness. More physical activity. I believe in that because it's what I have experienced myself over the past 9 years and it is why I am a bicycle advocate. I'm a volunteer and member of the Board of Directors for BikeHouston, Houston's local bicycle advocacy non-profit. I believe that BikeHouston is doing the very hard work of making Houston a great place to bike.
The Event
October 24th is BikeHouston's Moonlight Bicycle Ramble. It's a fun and famous nighttime bike ride that traverses all over the city. People dress up in costumes and decorate their bikes- even with funky lights! Not only is it a truly unique "Houston Thing", it is BikeHouston's most critical fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from the ride directly benefit BikeHouston, enabling them to advocate for better bicycle facilities, safe road conditions, and to build a grassroots movement for bicycling in our city.
About BikeHouston
BikeHouston is the only local non-profit organization focused on making Houston a safer place for all people to bike. BikeHouston works with the City of Houston, management districts, bicycle groups, bike shops, and neighborhood organizations to unite everyone on bikes, regardless of why or how they ride. Whether you are a recreational rider, do short neighborhood rides with your kids, or use your bike to commute, BikeHouston believes that everyone should have a safe place to ride.
Some of BikeHouston's recent accomplishments include:
- getting the city to embrace BikeHouston's Goal Zero Fatalities
